Some wise person once said that a smile is your best accessory. Just like the eyes are the windows into the soul, a genuine bright smile tells people that you’re an approachable person worth getting to know.
Why is Mathilde talking about teeth?
Let’s get something straight. My love affair with red wine and black coffee is serious. We bring each other joy and we don’t plan on breaking up anytime soon. This means I need to counter my guilty pleasures with a regular teeth whitening regime.
Recently, I read online about the latest teeth whitening trend: Activated charcoal. Allegedly, a sprinkle of activated charcoal on your toothbrush is an all natural way to remove the stains on your teeth without stripping them of the all important enamel.
According to the experts, activated charcoal’s natural adhesive qualities let it bind with surface-staining culprits like coffee, tea, and wine. However, its whitening power stops at stains, so if your teeth are naturally darker or yellow, you’ll need to buy a product with a bleaching agent like hydrogen peroxide or try an in-office treatment (which I also have).
I have the Activated Charcoal, now what?
First, break open a capsule of activated charcoal and sprinkle it onto your wet toothbrush before brushing your teeth normally. Your mouth will become pitch black, but keep gently brushing for your usual 2 minutes before rinsing out your mouth (and your sink) VERY WELL!
I certainly didn’t see the immediate whitening effect that so many bloggers and online reviewers saw, but it did leave my teeth feeling extremely clean and smooth.
The Wellness Mama says that “activated charcoal can actually be helpful in changing the pH and health of the mouth, and as such is effective in preventing cavities and killing the bad bacteria present in tooth decay and gingivitis”. When I remember, I try to incorporate a charcoal clean every 2-3 weeks simply for these benefits.
While soot-covered teeth may not sound like the most glamorous way to achieve a 100-watt smile, it’s worth adding this to your beauty routine simply to gain a healthier mouth! And perhaps you’ll be one of the lucky ones who’s teeth only needed a little charcoal to achieve those gleaming pearly whites.
**Note that activated charcoal shouldn’t replace everyday teeth cleaning and regular visits to the dentist.
